1. After 5 PM the call volume at the call center I work for increases. The bug exists because most people get off work around 5 PM and are free from work to call in about their issues with their car.
2. Between 4 PM and 6 PM the traffic on I-75 N is so unbearable that a commute that takes 15 minutes ends up taking 35 to 40 minutes. This bug exists because a lot of people from Ft. Myers and Estero work in Naples like I do and we all try to get home at the same time. It also exists because the highway only has 3 lanes.
3. Whenever I have an issue with an appliance in my apartment it takes the maintenance people 2-3 business days to handle the issue. This bug exists because my complex only has 2 maintenance workers on site.
4. I live next to a hockey arena (Hertz/Germain Arena) and the traffic after games or concerts is very congested. This bug exists because the street that leads to the arena doesn't have a streetlight to direct traffic.
5. If I get home late, I have to park 2 complexes down from my complex because the parking lot is full. This bug exists because there is no guest parking in my community for visitors.
6. I also live next to an outlet mall and I have to drive through it to get to the light that leads to the highway and the traffic there is really bad. This bug exists because the speed limit is 15 MPH and there are numerous stop signs you have to wait at.
7. Whenever I go to Costco I have to wait in line for the cashier line and the self-checkout lanes. This bug exists because there are 4 checkout lanes open and 4 checkout lanes.
8. Traffic flow in Naples can get congested around the wintertime. This bug exists because a large number of snow birds come down from Northern states to reside in their winter homes. This large number of "temporary residents" are old and older people tend to drive slower which congests major roadways in the city.
9. There is a concerning amount of cars in the breakdown lanes on I-75 through SWFL. This bug exists because there is only 1 rest stop in between Tampa and Naples.
10. It's difficult to find cuisine specific to my culture in Naples. This bug exists because, while there is a large number of Hispanics in the area, most of the businesses are run by Caucasians.
11. Rent is somewhat expensive in SWFL. My roommate and I pay $1800 per month, excluding expenses, for our 2 bedroom apartment. This bug exists because the median income in Naples is pretty high so renters take advantage of that.
12. There isn't a lot of "night life" in Naples. This bug exists because the majority of residents in Naples are older and don't go clubbing or partying.
13. WingStop in Naples is so busy at lunchtime that the line goes out the door. This bug exists because it's the only WingStop in the entire city.
14. You can't go to the beach past 10 PM in Naples. This bug exists because the beach is lined with mansions and the residents don't want other residents snooping around late at night.
15. The only things open in Naples after 12 AM are McDonald's and Waffle House. This bug exists because there is no night life in Naples.
16. The line for gas at Costco is backed up every time I go there. This bug exists because it's the only Costco in Naples.
17. Sun'N'Fun gets very packed during the summer. This bug exists because it's the only water park in Naples.
18. Employment in the area is a bit scarce if you don't want to work at Walmart or Publix. This bug exists because a lot of businesses in Naples are sole-props and don't belong to major chains like the majority of businesses in bigger cities.
19. Coastland Center Mall gets very busy during the afternoon. This bug exists because it's the only mall in Naples (Waterside Shops is full of high end designer brands I can't afford) so all the high school students, parents and other residents go there to shop.
20. A lot of the produce in the grocery stores has to be imported from surrounding areas. This bug exists because we only grow citrus in Immokalee, which is a 30 minute drive from Naples.
I didn't find this assignment to be as hard as I expected it to be because Naples is a very boring place to live in unless you're 55+ and have the ability to play golf until you have to be laid in your casket. I did hit a bit of a wall when I began to write but once I got a handle on it the issues I have with the city began to flow in. Who knew complaining about this lace would pay off one day?

Hey Brandon, just finished looking at your bug list. The first bug was one that stood out to me specifically because I also work at a call center! Whenever things start to get hectic there it can be very annoying. A lot of your bugs were Naples-specific, and while I have personally never been, one of my closest friends is from there so I showed this to him and he agreed with a lot of what you had to say, especially the night life comment.
ReplyDeleteHey Brandon, I just read your bug list and I am impressed at how detailed they are. When I wrote mine, I had troubled writing them, so I had to space the bug list out. That meant I wrote like five a day. That made it a lot easier for me. I definitely relate with number 5 because I also live in an apartment complex and the parking is terrible.
