27A - Reading Reflection No. 3

For this assignment I read Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck.

After reading this fine piece of literature I learned about the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Dweck provides various examples of how fixed mindsets can't compete against growth mindsets. People with growth mindsets have a tendency to succeed through hard work and dedication. People with fixed mindsets have a tendency to fail since they believe they can't do anything if they're not "talented" enough to do so.

The message in this book applies to Entrepreneurship because it reminds us that we should look for opportunity everywhere. If we keep a tunnel vision to things we'll never grow our profits or minds to fix new problems that arise.

An activity I would provide the class based from the book is a survey. In the book people were handed surveys to determine whether they had fixed or growth mindsets. I would provide the same type of survey to see what responses I get from the class.

What stood out to me the most in the book was Dweck's use of Superman actor Christopher Reeve. Reeve was involved in an accident that could've cost him his life if he had let it. He fought paralysis with the vision of being better one day and worked to do so by using a growth mindset.

  1. Hello Brandon! I completely agree with the author said about a growth and fixed mindset. I think having a growth mindset versus having a fixed mindset is what sets a good entrepreneur from a bad one. As a entrepreneur you need to be always thinking of what next step is and how to grow to get there. You need to always be thinking out of the box and thinking about all perspectives. Great post Brandon!
